Hi, I’m Katie!

My friends call me Katiebird, or just Bird, and I love to bake.  I created Katiebird Bakes with you, the home baker, in mind: here you will find sophisticated yet approachable recipes that anyone can bake.

I’m a lawyer, but my real passion in life is food.  I try to create recipes that are streamlined and efficient enough to be baked on a weeknight after work, because that’s when I squeeze it in. My recipes are always from scratch but I do my best not to make them complicated or intimidating.

My goal is to create recipes you will actually bake!

Too many people have told me they “can’t bake” but I think what they really mean is they haven’t quite learned the technique yet or practiced enough to discover that it isn’t difficult. All you need to do is follow directions, and I try to give extremely clear and easy-to-follow steps in each recipe to help with that.

I live with my husband Brian in a one-bedroom apartment in downtown Chicago.  We met as college freshmen, dated long distance for four years after graduation, and I finally joined him in Chicago after law school. He’s my best friend and brutally honest taste tester.

One of my favorite things to do is cook for him, although his preferred food groups are PB&Js, Diet Coke, Kraft Mac & Cheese, and Ruffles chips with ketchup.  It’s a work in progress.

I am not a chef and am a completely self-taught (and mom-and-grandma taught) home baker and cook.  This means that while I test all of my recipes at least twice before posting, I’m not an expert by any means.  I mess up in the kitchen a lot and it’s always a learning process!  It’s part of the fun, but please know that if you change a ratio or measurement in my recipe I can’t tell you for sure how it will turn out.

Other than baking, I love working out (strength training, tennis, and walking all over Chicago), Trader Joe’s, epic fantasy novels (Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter will always be my OGs), smoothie bowls, the University of Notre Dame (Go Irish!), traveling to new places, and avocado toast.

Thank you so much for stopping by!  I hope you share these recipes with friends and family, create new memories, and never stop baking!
